Samus Starbody My name is Samus Starbody, and I am a multidisciplinary artist from every neighborhood on the Southside of Chicago. I believe that everyone deserves to make the art that they are passionate about, regardless of their circumstances. I come from a family of creators and storytellers, and have engaged in those practices for as long as I can remember. My creative process and practices are reflective of my nomadic nature and varied experiences, as well as both the joys and difficulties that follow. Through dance, mixed media, and writing, I use art as a tool for exploring my own journey and interests in relation to the world around me. My work is reflective of my soft and eclectic personality, focusing on releasing personal trauma and obsession, understanding different ways of viewing, and nuanced storytelling.

Description of Project/Practice: Samus Starbody’s dance practice is rooted in trauma informed research and blood memories. Through a modern and Afro-contemporary movement vocabulary, he explores the nuances of his relationship with dance and ancestry. The work in progress “Cotillon” serves as a moment to further tap into the blood memories of the women who nurture and guide me.
